Purbasthali is a sleepy little railway station after Nabadwip on the Katwa line, about three hours from Calcutta. Here the river Ganges flows at a very gentle pace and over the years has created a number of ox-bow lakes around itself. One of these, perhaps the largest in the area, is famous for its winter migratory bird population and is fairly popular with birders from the city.
